Meet Lakshimi Bhagwan - the Yogini who has helped hundreds of people over the years to battle physical ailments, pregnancy blues, and fitness concerns. Her certifications in Yoga, Pilates, and Kickboxing has garnered students from different walks of life. In this third instalment of #featuredtrainer, we talk to her to find out more about Lakshmi's take on Yoga and the importance of learning.
How did you begin your journey?
My journey started 16 years ago. I completed my Diploma in Yoga Therapy during a time when Yoga was not a fad or a trend. It was just considered to be another form of exercise. Realizing Yoga can help people heal from within, I used my knowledge in Yoga to alter yoga poses for people with a medical condition to make them feel better without much pain killers and medication. Through the years, I have witnessed people recover with Yoga and continue to practice as it allows them to keep calm and grounded. Two years after my diploma, I started teaching pre and postnatal yoga classes with my pre and Post Natal Yoga Alliance certification. Along the way, I also trained in Yoga for Trauma sensitive. To expand my horizon, I completed my certification to be Spencer's Pilates Instructor and Aerobic Kickboxing.
If there is one story you’d like to share that reflects on your teaching experience.
Teaching is that one profession that gives butterflies in the stomach as you reminisce about the times you have made a difference in a person's life. Over the years, I have taken several prenatal Yoga classes for pregnant women to relieve their discomfort and anxiety. A particular story that always brings a smile to me is that of a young woman who was afraid of her pregnancy and childbirth. Initially, her only solution to combat the pain was epidural. As she continued my classes, we worked on several breathing techniques that would help her handle contraction pain during delivery. I still remember the day she called me to say that she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. She was so pleased to have handled her labour with no issue or anxiety and without an epidural. It was one of my happiest moments.
Keeping momentum is important. How do you do it?
I am a teacher, yes. But I am also a student. Evolution is part of human nature, and we all need to ensure we evolve with time. That is why I strongly believe in reading. I continually upgrade my knowledge of Yoga and fitness. This, I think, is my way of giving back to the society I come from. And, that has allowed me to sustain my profession over the years.
Can you tell us how are you adapting during the quarantine?
I am following social distancing now that it is the norm. It’s not easy to stay home and work as a fitness instructor, but with WorkoutParty! and Zoom, it is surprisingly working pretty well. While I do not take on many classes as before, the ability to still continue classes from my house really keeps me grounded.
Once the Circuit breaker is lifted, I believe people will get back to their regular routine, but I think it is best if we continue to avoid personal contacts and crowded places for some time.
What is your fitness mantra?
A mind is a sacred place, the power hub of the body. I firmly believe that a person's mental fitness is as necessary as physical fitness. And that is why I always tell my students, "Be the master of your mind."
What can a student expect from your class?
As a yoga instructor, I believe that your fitness journey should be a friend that should accompany you through all phases of life. Imparting this knowledge to my students, I help them discover and maintain their general well being through various forms of exercises, including Yoga, Pilates, and kickboxing. Having said that, I also focus on creating a custom plan for women to deal with post-pregnancy weight loss. Also, I conduct sessions for strength training and conditioning.
